The Children's School was founded in 2004 by Daniel P. Ryan in order to bring progressive education, with its historical Chicago roots in the work of John Dewey and others,
The Children’s School operates with two directors, part-time administrative support, and a part-time bookkeeper. The Director of Curriculum and Instruction oversees all teaching and learning. Our Director of Administration oversees all of the school’s administrative needs. Together, this team works closely with faculty to keep the school pedagogically and financially sound.
Every day these individuals bring their passion for teaching and children to their classrooms where our project-based learning comes to life.
The Children’s School operates with the guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors composed of current members (enrolled families) and community-based advocates. The Board’s focus is twofold: to ensure the school’s fiscal health and management, and to set organizational policy regarding administrative matters.
Our music education program exposes children to the joys and techniques of reading, interpreting, and performing a variety of music. All students participate in chorus, and 2nd-5th graders also learn recorder. We celebrate their accomplishments with two musical performances per year.
The Children’s School works with a number of community artists to advance curriculum goals and needs, especially classroom projects.
